Hiking the Trail

When my son graduated from North Carolina State University, we dropped him off at Mount Katahdin, Maine and five months later we picked him up at Springer Mountain, Georgia. Amazingly, he hiked the entire Appalachian Trail which is a total of 2,174 miles. Leaving him on that cool, brisk sunny day in May was one of the hardest things that I have ever done. It was something that he desperately wanted to do and I had to put my faith and trust in God that He would look over my son and protect him, but if this was not God's will and something went wrong; my faith and trust allowed me to believe that God would give me the strength that I needed to survive. My son made it and along the way spent a lot of time with God, enjoyed the beauty of God's creation, made lasting friendships, but struggled each day with the strenuous effort that it took to survive walking for 20 or so miles most days. He persevered and learned many life lessons along the way. I was BLESSED as I watched my son continue on his quest. I prayed continuously, hiked some of the trail with him, mailed him packages to the mail drops along the trail, and waited patiently on the precious and few phone calls that he could make along the way. It is hard to describe the feeling of pride and love that I felt as I saw him walking toward me at the end of that trail. I hugged that dirty, smelly, son of mine and thanked God for all of the BLESSINGS along the way!

I've been keeping my eyes peeled for this post. (My Dad always said that, too. He also used to say, "Stick to your guns" when he wanted us hold our convictions. Anyway....)
This hike stroy is an amazing life-changing thing for a young man to do.
So...
When you have time, tell us about the spiral walking stick he took with him. =)
I have a post coming about walking sticks like the one you have in that March 27 post. They are not common and begin in a special "natural" way.

I'm glad to hear that all went well. It's times like that it's tough to trust God, but in the end your faith is stronger because of it. I'm sure he'll remember this for the rest of his life.

What an accomplishment, I know you're proud! That is probably a good time to do that right after you graduate before too many other things get in the way of it.
One of my best friends has a son who quit college to work in a ski town for a few years; they thought he might come home after this season and now he's wanting to hike the AT. I don't think he's going to be able to do but half of the trail. I know they will worry about him & have already worried about him and his spiritual growth so I hope this could be a good time for him.
It sounds like it was wonderful for your son. Thanks for sharing that.

What a great adventure - and how proud you must be. I thought immediately of Peter Jenkins and his book "A Walk Across America". I hope your son kept a journal. What an amazing story he must have to tell.

Oh my, what we Mother's endure... I can't imagine. But we serve a God who is faithful and trustworthy... and loves our kids more than we could ever imagine. AND HE knows to not to give me more than we can handle...
Our third born/ baby just turned 18 and got his license and I've had to once again turn over my fears and trust him with the Lord, as I did with the other two. The Lord has given me such a peace!
Thanks for sharing Nancy!
