"FIXING TO"
Growing up in a very rural, very southern, very small, NC town; gave me one of the richest "southern dialects" possible. I have tried my entire life to figure some of the phrases out; where they came from, what are they really suppose to mean, and what words/letters are being substituted. "Fixin da", I think means "fixing to " but it still doesn't really make sense to me even though I am accused of using the phrase without being aware of it. Examples: I was "fixin da" say. I am "fixin da" go to town. You are "fixin da" get on my last nerve! So just in case y'all didn't know (ha,ha, ha), I am being BLESSED with the wedding of my daughter on July 21st. Keeping that in mind... I am "FIXIN DA" have a wedding and I am too busy to blog! I shall return with lots of fun stuff.

Well I have been "fixin" to find out just where ya'll have been keepin' yourself her' lately!! Course I knew there was a wedding comin' up soon. Just enjoy and come back when all the festivities are over with...Sandy
I am a transplanted Texan and one of the phrases that has become part of my vocabulary is "fixin' da" - just because I love saying it. I love Texas with all my heart and want nothing more than to fit right in. So Y'all have a wonderful time at the wedding and we'll be waiting for all the pictures!!
I used to hear that all the time when my KY grandparents were still alive!
Enjoy all the wedding prep and fun
xo
LOL. Yea, I know a few "southern words" myself seeing as how 90% of my family R rednecks. :P Have fun planning that wedding and we'll see you when all's said and done. Hopefully with LOTS of picutres. :)
I always thought it was "fixin ta" and not "fixin da", but what do I know as I grew up in northern Illinois.
Enjoy your wedding planning stage. That always entails a lot of work, but fun work.
Your readers will keep (will not perish) until you have time to spare for some more blogging.
"Fixin Da" is a good one. I was telling Sandy the other day that I had a friend down south who said "Mash the foot feed" for "step on the gas" [go faster].
If my Julie was a blogger (and she's anything but) she would have no time to blog either. She is amazing. Lists galore--multi-tasking, cell phone ringing, networking all her hard-working friends. The RSVP list now exceeds 400. (Oops! It was going to be 350.)You can update later. Things are going great here. I don't know what to expect. I can't sit through a movie without getting "drippy" eyes. I am not ready for this, but have no idea how to be emotionally ready so... we'll see.
I'm going to throw you a curve here... Please pray for my brother, Dave. He is an excellent videographer/film maker and will be shooting the wedding. He has made two videos: one for the service intro and one for the reception. He called yesterday morning to say they were done. He called an hour later to tell us his house was on fire. Four fire trucks were hosing his house as he spoke. The house interior is ruined at all three levels, but no one was injured. They will be out of their house for four months. BUT he was able to get his studio equipment, and the videos out with the help of a fireman. I talked to him tonight and he and his wife are doing as well as can be expected--still in shock. He insists on still shooting the wedding. His skill is impossible to replace so we're very happy he'll be able to do it, but we feel so bad for them. I wanted to drive over there 3.5 hours, but he said there's nothing we can do. The insurance company is taking care of everything. It feels sort of like a death in the family, but we know we have much to be thankful for because it was not a death in the family.
Thanks for stopping by tonight.
I can relate as I have been gone for a little while due to my sister's wedding (which was on the 16th - maybe I'll post a picture soon.) Anyway,it was a success. Enjoy this time - you won't believe how fast the actual wedding and reception fly by!
I'm so glad you stopped by for a minute at least! Can't wait to see the wedding pictures. It'll be here before we know it.
I still say "fixin' ta" from living in Arkansas - I also have some Swedish stuff from Minnesota. Oh, what a mixed linguistic mess I am.
Hi ya'll.
Just wait tell you come out Utah.
Apparently {WE} have our own way to say MANY things and I so mean many. I didn't even know that I spoke "Utahan" until a few months ago...beats me.
Just so you know Nancy.
After reading your post the next day I was hanging with my mom and dad....made some comment with "fixin da". Never in my life have I even used those words until I read your post. TO FUNNY!
My grandmother from Oklahoma used to say that! I miss those phrases!
Good luck with all the fun wedding preparations!
It's Monday. Five more nights at home with us for my daughter. =/
Less than 3 weeks to go! YAY!!!!
Nancy,
It's worth it. Enjoy these days and enjoy the wedding day itself. It will be full of blessings, and yes, after the brief "let down" from all the days of preparation, there is life. It feels like summer has now begun!
I love to hear southern phrases! I've been thinking about you and all you must have going on! Can't imagin how you would have time to blog--so enjoy it all as much as possible! I'll be praying for you, your beautiful daughter, and your family!
Blessings to You always! Claudia O.
17 days and counting!
